Did you know that 1996 gave us two of the most technically demanding practical sets in the history of television?
Welcome to Matchup 1: "Virtual Insanity" vs. "Tonight, Tonight." This is the ultimate battle of physical constraint. Jonathan Glazer created an architectural illusion for Jamiroquai by physically pushing massive walls around a stationary floor to simulate a moving room. On the other side, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris hand-cranked a deeply theatrical, painstakingly crafted homage to Georges Méliès' silent films for The Smashing Pumpkins. Both required an agonizing amount of physical labor.
Are you voting for the sliding f̶l̶o̶o̶r̶ walls or the silent film tribute?
Other Information:
• "Virtual Insanity" required Jay Kay to sing the track at varying speeds to match the physical pushing of the heavy wall units.
• Virtually every backdrop in "Tonight Tonight" was a practical and hand-painted.
• "Tonight, Tonight" swept the 1996 VMAs, taking home six awards including Video of the Year.
