The Sign spent six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the best-selling single in the United States for the entire year of 1994 — four Swedish pop musicians who had never been to America became inescapable on American radio essentially overnight. The video cost almost nothing; nobody cared. The song was originally released in Sweden in 1992 as "Vägen" before being re-recorded in English, and the band was originally called Tech Noir, after the nightclub in The Terminator.
