Aerosmith's "Amazing" earned five technical VMA nominations (Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Special Effects) and won none — Aerosmith's three Moonmen that night all went to "Cryin'." One of the earliest music videos to use significant CGI to tell a narrative story, it follows Alicia Silverstone and Stephen Dorff through an animated fantasy sequence featuring a VR headset, a CD-ROM drive, and a twist ending where the male protagonist turns out to have been the character on someone else's screen the whole time — in 1993, two years before the internet became a household word. The head-mounted display was real hardware from a company called Liquid Image, and Don Henley sings uncredited backing vocals on the song.
