Alanis Morissette originally wanted to scrap 'Ironic' from Jagged Little Pill because she thought it did not fit the angry tone of the album. She and producer Glen Ballard wrote the track in just 15 minutes. To match its chaotic energy, director Stéphane Sednaoui kept the video simple. He filmed Alanis inside a 1978 Lincoln Continental during a freezing winter in New Jersey. The four different versions of Alanis we see in the car represent the different facets of a single person navigating life's messy journey. English teachers have spent 30 years arguing that the lyrics describe bad luck instead of actual irony. The music video was filmed out in the freezing elements in Closter, New Jersey. Following the September 11 attacks, Clear Channel placed the song on a restricted radio list due to the lyrics describing a plane crash. The editing team won an MTV Video Music Award in 1996 for seamlessly layering the multiple performances.
