Alanis Morissette
The concept for this video came to Alanis Morissette while she was standing in the shower. It makes perfect sense. The video is the ultimate metaphor for stripping away the "angry" persona the world expected from her after Jagged Little Pill. Instead of a high-concept fashion shoot, Director Stephane Sednaoui placed her in mundane, gritty locations—a subway, a grocery store, a street corner—without the armor of clothing. The "softness" of the lighting and the slightly grainy film stock help sell the intimacy. It doesn't feel like an exhibitionist stunt; it feels like a spiritual cleansing. She is physically cold (filming took place at night in downtown LA), which adds a layer of physical reality to the emotional lyrics about fragility and silence. The team used a specific "city block" lockdown permit in Los Angeles to film the street scenes legally. Alanis wore small latex patches to avoid technically breaking public indecency laws, though she was effectively nude on set. This was the lead single for Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, an album that confused critics at the time but is now considered a cult classic.
