Jive Records refused to fund the "Everybody" video because they thought a horror parody would flop. The Backstreet Boys ended up paying for the shoot themselves. Director Joseph Kahn used that budget to hire professional SFX makeup artists and film the choreography with massive crane shots. It became one of the most iconic videos of the 90s. The record label initially did not even want to release the song as a single in the US market, meaning the video was originally only greenlit to play on European television. The iconic zombie style dance routine was created by legendary choreographer Fatima Robinson specifically as a modern homage to Michael Jackson's "Thriller." One of the special effects makeup artists hired for the shoot previously worked on the iconic 1987 horror film Hellraiser.
