Beau Travail
The closing dance of Claire Denis's Beau Travail is one of cinema's most discussed endings. The film cuts from the main character making his bed with a pistol nearby — an ending Denis deliberately leaves ambiguous — straight to Denis Lavant's explosive solo dance to Corona's "The Rhythm of the Night." Lavant improvised much of the choreography, drawing on his circus training to create movements that look like a body fighting against itself. The scene was shot in a nightclub in Djibouti, where the film is set, and remains the ultimate example of how the right song placement can change the entire meaning of a movie.
