The robots in this video were not 100% CGI. Director Cunningham, Chris came from a practical effects background, having worked under Stanley Kubrick’s team. He built two fully functional, life-sized puppets that were controlled by operators on set. This gave the cameras something real to focus on, providing realistic light interaction and physical weight that computers in 1999 simply couldn't fake. The post-production process was legendary for its brutality. Cunningham wanted the machines to look "erotic but clinical," requiring complex animation of internal gears and hydraulics that had to match the physical puppets perfectly. The post-production took months of agonizing detail work, burning out the team but resulting in a piece of art that was eventually displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
