The official video for alt-pop band frank’s debut track ‘dirt and onions’ - a song about hoping to break from the mundane and routine, to something greater. The video is a frame-by-frame animation printed on onion skin (vellum) which was then altered by hand. Each sequence would be either drawn on, cut up, collaged in a mixed media style to achieve its final look. To parallel the theme of the song, each frame was printed on onion skin (vellum/translucent paper) and altered by hand (mixed media work). The mixed media manipulation on each sequence is heightened as the video progresses - from overlaid frames to illustrations to collage to ink splatters. The frame-by-frame method was a fitting medium for this song as, in order to execute it, there is a lot of repetitive and routine work involved before you can finally look back at it and see what the journey has amounted to.
