"Lucas with the Lid Off" was one of the first major videos to pull off the "one-shot" trick without digital editing. Director Michel Gondry designed a circular set where every scene led physically into the next. This meant that while the camera moved slowly and smoothly, the artist, Lucas, was frantically running an obstacle course behind the walls to get to his next mark on time. The crew even left "guide frames" (small photos on stands) visible in the background to help the camera operator match the angles perfectly for the scene transitions. It is a perfect example of Gondry's "in-camera" philosophy—if you want it to look like magic, you have to build the trick for real. The video was nominated for Best Music Video at the 37th Grammy Awards (1995) but lost to The Rolling Stones' "Love Is Strong." This video helped put Michel Gondry on the map in the US, leading to his later work with artists like Daft Punk, The White Stripes, and Björk. The "looping" concept was designed to mimic the repetitive nature of the jazz samples used in the track's production.
