Massive Attack
The "skyscraper" in this video is actually a flat set built on a studio floor. Director Michel Gondry wanted to create a video that felt like a voyeuristic drift through a city at night, but he also wanted to mess with the laws of physics. By building the rooms horizontally and filming from above, he unlocked a "gravity-free" environment. This technique required the actors to act while lying down, which was physically grueling. Massive Attack member 3D (Robert Del Naja) later said the shoot was "agonizing" and the start of his long-term back problems because he had to hold himself in awkward positions against "slanting walls" to sell the illusion for take after take.
