Nirvana
Kurt Cobain wrote the entire surreal treatment for the "Heart-Shaped Box" video himself. In 1993, Nirvana teamed up with director Corbijn, Anton to bring Cobain's specific vision to life. To achieve the video's distinct color palette, Corbijn used a complex transfer process. He shot the video in color, converted it to black and white, and then individually hand-tinted the colors back in. The result looks like a vintage, decaying photograph that perfectly matches the dark themes of the song. Kurt Cobain originally wanted legendary author William S. Burroughs to play the old man on the cross, but Burroughs declined the offer. Corbijn, Anton released a Director's Cut of the video on his DVD series, featuring alternate camera angles and extra footage of the little girl in the poppy field. The video won two MTV Video Music Awards in 1994, which were awarded just months after Cobain's tragic passing.
