Rebecca Black
"Friday" dropped in 2011. Rebecca Black was 13. Within weeks it had over 100 million views and she was the punchline of the entire internet — death threats, late night mockery, the works. She pulled the video from YouTube temporarily because of it. What happened after is the part people forget. She kept making music. She came out as queer. She built a DJ career playing festivals including Portola. She released SALVATION in 2025 — a self-released hyperpop album exploring queer identity and the idealization of female pop artists — entirely on her own terms. "Speakerphone" is the first single from album three, written with Jesse Saint John Geller and produced by Ruairi O'Flaherty. Directed by Hannah De Vries. She said it best herself: "My career has always been defined by conflicting opinions about me. Now I'm at a point where I've decided this is who I am, and I'm not bothered by anyone's opinions."
