Michel Gondry used a custom rig of still cameras and roughly 12,000 morphed still photographs to fake a frozen, rotating camera — view-morphing that laid conceptual groundwork for the frozen-time effect The Matrix made famous four years later (Matrix VFX lead John Gaeta publicly credited Gondry while drawing the technical line between the two approaches). For the performance shots, one out of every five frames was retained and morphed back into smooth footage, creating a warped, smearing motion digital cameras still struggle to replicate. The video stars Patricia Arquette, and the track was recorded during the sessions for the Stones' live album Stripped.
