The Smashing Pumpkins
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris strapped cameras to the backseat of a car and followed a group of teenagers through house parties and late-night driving, shot on grainy 16mm to feel like home-video footage nobody meant to keep. The band appear in disguise: Jimmy Chamberlin as a cop, James Iha as a convenience store clerk, D'arcy Wretzky as an irate neighbour, Billy Corgan as a man in the backseat of a car. The original footage was lost when a crew member left the film reels on the roof of a car and drove off, forcing a reshoot of the party scenes. It won Best Alternative Video at the 1996 VMAs and was nominated for Grammy Record of the Year; the title refers to the year Billy Corgan was ten years old.
