F. Gary Gray used groundbreaking fluid-simulation CGI — rendered on high-end Silicon Graphics workstations — to turn TLC into liquid ghosts, a massive technical undertaking that stopped pop culture in its tracks in 1995 while the video addressed heavy social issues. TLC became the first Black group to win the VMA for Video of the Year.
