Tom Petty as a morgue attendant; Kim Basinger as a corpse he takes home, dresses, dances with, and eventually releases into the ocean. Director Keir McFarlane's pure-horror concept won Best Female Video at the 1994 VMAs — a hilarious bit of trivia, since the female lead was playing a dead person the entire time. Basinger, who agreed after Petty reportedly called her directly, found playing a lifeless object a refreshing change of pace; the final shot of her opening her eyes in the water was a last-minute addition for one final supernatural jolt. Petty wrote the song in a single afternoon during sessions for his Greatest Hits album.
