Wallflowers
David Fincher essentially used a music video as an excuse to do a massive street photography project. In 1996, fresh off directing the thriller Se7en, Fincher teamed up with The Wallflowers for "6th Avenue Heartache." He and cinematographer Harris Savides shot a moody tribute to classic New York street photography. They wove actual still photographs directly into the moving footage, creating a stuttering, isolated aesthetic that perfectly matched the melancholic tone of the song. Adam Duritz from Counting Crows provided the prominent background vocals for the track. Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played the slide guitar, but he recorded his part entirely in his home studio and never actually met the band. Lead singer Jakob Dylan wrote the song when he was only 18 years old, considering it the first real track he had ever written.
